Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs)

Sport utility vehicles and crossovers are popular for offering great cargo/passenger versatility and an elevated driving position.  Most models also offer all-wheel-drive for superior all-weather traction on a variety surfaces.  SUVs are available in a wide range of sizes and prices, with many features.  Currently, True Consumer Reviews has reviews for Compact, Midsize and Medium Luxury SUVs and Crossovers covering 49 of the most popular models in the US.  The segment you choose will depend on how many people and what sort of gear you typically carry, what features you want, your towing needs (if any), and how much you are willing to spend.

Compact SUVs: Typically range from $20-30,000, popularly equipped.  Tight accommodation for 3 passengers across the rear seat, with some accommodating adult leg room better than others.  Though many offer a 6 cylinder engine, most are sold with 4 cylinders, getting city fuel economies over 20 MPG, and highway fuel economies in the upper twenties/low thirties.  Towing capacity for 4-cylinder versions is typically limited to 1,000-2,500 pounds.  Popular models include the Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4.

Midsize SUVs: Typically range from $30,000-40,000, popularly equipped.  Most will accommodate 3 adults across in the rear seat in reasonable comfort.  Some offer 3 rows of seats as a standard or optional feature, enabling them to seat 7 or 8 passengers.  However, 3rd row space is very limited for most, and should be regarded as for occasional use for short trips and/or smaller children only.  Though 4 and 8 cylinder engines are available, most are sold with a V6, getting city fuel economies in the upper teens and highway fuel economies in the low to mid twenties.  Towing capacity typically runs between 3,500-6,000 pounds.  Popular models include the Toyota Highlander and Chevrolet Traverse.

Medium Luxury SUVs: Similar in size and power to midsize SUVs, but with more uplevel V8 or V6 turbo engine options, higher content, and luxury brands.  Popular models include the Lexus RX and Cadillac SRX.
